Dr. James Paugh joins Marshall Health Network, Marshall School of Medicine as faculty physician

Dr. James Paugh

LOGAN, W.Va.James C. Paugh II, D.O., a board-certified general surgeon at Logan Regional Medical Center, joins Marshall Health Network and the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine as an assistant professor of surgery.

Paugh has more than 11 years of experience in general and minimally-invasive surgery and wound care at Logan Regional Medical Center (LRMC), where he currently serves as medical director of wound care for the LRMC’s Advanced Wound Center. During his decade-long career at LRMC, Paugh has worked alongside Marshall surgeon Jodi Cisco-Goff, M.D., and helped establish the rural general surgery residency at Logan through the Marshall Community Health Consortium.

As a faculty physician at Marshall, Paugh will be an integral part of the general surgery services Marshall Health provides at LRMC. He will also have a more formalized role in teaching residents and medical students who rotate through the Logan office.

“Dr. Paugh’s extensive experience in providing surgical care to patients in southern West Virginia underscores the critical role of rural surgery in addressing the healthcare needs of our communities,” said Farzad Amiri, M.D., associate professor of surgery and rural surgery residency program director. “His addition to Marshall Health Network strengthens our residency program by offering invaluable training opportunities and reinforcing our commitment to preparing future surgeons for rural practice. In collaboration with Logan Regional Medical Center, our rural surgery residency program received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as the first (and only) officially designated, separately accredited rural residency training program in the nation.”

“Drs. Paugh and Cisco-Goff have worked collaboratively for over a decade to provide exceptional surgical care for their patients here at Logan Regional Medical Center. Bringing them together in the same Marshall Health Network practice is the next logical step and will be beneficial to their patients as they continue to work as a team in addressing the community’s surgical needs. It is also important as the general surgery residency grows and they train the next generation of rural general surgeons,” said David Brash, CEO of LRMC.

In 2022, Marshall’s rural general surgery residency at LRMC became the first separately accredited rural surgery residency in the U.S. The program is now fully accredited with six current residents.

Paugh earned his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, followed by a general surgery residency at Affinity Medical Center in Massillon, Ohio. Paugh is accepting new patients and referrals at the Marshall Surgery clinic in Logan, 77 Hospital Drive on the campus of LRMC. For appointments, call 304.792.1847.
