Scholarship honors Marshall University medical school graduates

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Henry P. Porter Jr., Ph.D., recently established a new scholarship endowment at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine to commemorate the careers and contributions of his lifelong friends and two of the school’s medical alumni, James C. McCabe, M.D., and Ray M. Van Metre, M.D.

Henry P. Porter Jr., Ph.D.

“This scholarship is a tribute to honor the remarkable journeys of two outstanding men,” said Porter, a Charleston, West Virginia, native and professor of history whose teaching career spans 38 years at Washington and Lee University. “My hope is their dedication and achievements will serve as an inspiration for others to follow in their footsteps.”

Both McCabe and Van Metre, who are also from Charleston, share a legacy of academic excellence and professional achievement. McCabe graduated from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in 1988 and went on to complete an internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was in private practice for 25 years at Southeastern Nephrology Associates in Wilmington, North Carolina, and served five years as chief medical officer at KBP BioSciences, a biotechnology research organization based in Princeton, New Jersey.

Van Metre earned his medical degree from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in 2000 and pursued a general surgery internship and ear, nose and throat (ENT)/otolaryngology residency at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. He now practices at the Lexington Clinic in Lexington, Kentucky.

The James C. McCabe, M.D., & Ray M. Van Metre, M.D., Scholarship is designated for first-year medical students with first preference to residents of West Virginia. The award is renewable for up to three additional years, pending normal academic progress.
