Applications now open for AED distribution program in Cabell, Mason and Wayne counties

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — FaithHealth Appalachia, in partnership with Marshall Health Network, is now accepting applications for the distribution of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to organizations in Cabell, Mason and Wayne counties in West Virginia. The initiative, made possible through congressionally-directed funding support from U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin III, aims to improve community preparedness and response to cardiac emergencies by increasing the availability of life-saving equipment throughout the region.
“Access to AEDs may mean the difference between life and death during sudden cardiac arrest,” said Rev. Rory Chapman, executive director of FaithHealth Appalachia. “Thanks to Senators Capito and Manchin, we are making an important step toward strengthening emergency readiness in our communities, especially in rural and underserved areas.”
An AED (automated external defibrillator) is a portable medical device used to assist individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It analyzes the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electric shock—known as defibrillation—to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. The devices being provided through this initiative are LIFEPAK CR2 AEDs by Stryker, known for their advanced technology, ease of use and Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows for continuous monitoring and readiness.
Eligible applicants include community centers, sports leagues, and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Other organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are encouraged to apply. Applications should demonstrate how the AED will be positioned to serve the public in high-traffic or high-risk areas.
Awarded applicants will be required to complete training on the devices, which will be provided by the St. Mary’s Heart Institute.
Priority consideration will be given to organizations that apply on or before 5 p.m. EST, Friday, June 6, 2025. To apply, visit faithhealthappalachia.org/aed-application. For questions or more information, contact FaithHealth Appalachia at 304.399.1765 or rory.chapman@mhnetwork.org.
