Advanced structural heart program at Marshall Health Network enhances care for complex cardiac conditions

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Health Network is expanding access to structural cardiology care, offering patients advanced minimally invasive treatments for complex heart conditions previously requiring open-heart surgery. These services are available locally through the network’s growing structural heart program.

Structural cardiology focuses on diagnosing and treating abnormalities of the heart’s valves, walls, and chambers using catheter-based techniques. The program offers procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), MitraClip™ for mitral valve repair, Watchman™ left atrial appendage closure and atrial septal defect (ASD) closures—all designed to improve outcomes and reduce recovery time.

To lead this growth, the network has welcomed Samian Sulaiman, M.D., an interventional cardiologist with advanced fellowship training in structural heart interventions. Sulaiman specializes in catheter-based therapies for structural heart disease, providing patients with less invasive treatment options and comprehensive follow-up care.

“Our structural heart program is transforming the way we care for patients with heart valve and other complex cardiac conditions,” said Mehiar El Hamdani, M.D., professor and chair of cardiovascular services at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. “With the addition of Dr. Sulaiman’s expertise, we are able to expand these offerings and deliver advanced treatments to our patients right here at home.”

Sulaiman earned his medical degree from the University of Tishreen in Latakia, Syria. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Presence of St. Francis Hospital/University of Illinois at Chicago and fellowships in general cardiology, interventional cardiology and structural heart at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology and echocardiology.

The structural cardiology team practices at Marshall Cardiology – Huntington, located at the Erma Ora Byrd Clinical Center, and performs procedures at Cabell Huntington Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center.
