Marshall Health Network welcomes two neurosurgeons
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall Health Network has expanded its neurosurgery team with the addition of Alexandria Marino, M.D., Ph.D., and Mayur Sharma, M.D., MCh, strengthening access to advanced neurosurgical care for patients throughout the region. Both physicians join the faculty of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and will see patients at Marshall Neurosurgery, serving Cabell Huntington Hospital and the Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center.
Marino, an assistant professor of neurosurgery, earned her medical and doctoral degrees from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and completed her neurosurgery residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. She has completed fellowship training in neurocritical care as well as a clinical fellowship in New Zealand. Her research interests include outcomes and clinical monitoring in critically ill patients with traumatic brain injury, clinical outcomes in spine surgery and medical/surgical education. She is a general neurosurgeon committed to providing excellent care to patients with surgical diseases of the spine, brain and peripheral nerves. A West Virginia native, Marino is honored to return to the state to serve patients.
Sharma, an associate professor of neurosurgery, brings extensive training in skull-base, brain tumors, cerebrovascular, functional, spine oncology and minimally invasive neurosurgery. Sharma completed his medical school and general surgery residency at Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas (G.S.) Medical College and King Edward (KEM) Memorial Hospital, in Mumbai, India. He then completed his neurosurgery residency at Grant Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals in Mumbai and spent a year at Sir J.J. Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery. Sharma came to the United States and completed four fellowships at various prestigious institutions including Cleveland Clinic, The Ohio State University and University of Louisville. He also completed a second neurosurgery residency at the University of Louisville. He is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Sharma served as an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis before joining Marshall University.
His clinical, research and academic interests include awake craniotomy for brain tumors, endoscopic surgery, skull base/complex cranial neurosurgery and minimally invasive cranial and spine surgery. His approach to patient care includes putting the patient first and providing the best possible neurosurgical care in the region by collaborating with different subspecialities at Marshall Health Network. Sharma has helped author more than 200 journal articles, presented at various national and international meetings and contributed to numerous book chapters.
