Marshall Health Network expands heart failure care to HIMG

Dr. Carlos Rueda named medical director of heart failure services

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall Health Network has expanded specialized heart failure care to its Huntington Internal Medicine Group (HIMG) campus, providing greater access to advanced cardiac care for patients in the region. As part of this growth, Carlos Rueda, M.D., FACC, has been named medical director of heart failure services at HIMG.

Rueda, who joined Marshall Health in 2018, is the region’s only board-certified, fellowship-trained heart failure specialist. Heart failure is a progressive condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively. It affects more than 6 million Americans and is one of the leading causes of hospitalizations nationwide.

At HIMG, Rueda works with Shari Wiley, APRN, FNP-BC, AACC, CHFN, a cardiology nurse practitioner with more than 30 years of experience, to offer early intervention and personalized treatment plans for heart failure that may include weight management, medication therapy, remote monitoring, care for pulmonary hypertension and the use of specialized devices.

“By bringing Dr. Rueda’s expertise in heart failure to our HIMG location, we’re prioritizing access to advanced specialty care for patients managing this complex condition,” said Larry D. Dial, M.D., chief physician executive for Marshall Health Network. “This approach not only enhances quality of care but also plays a critical role in reducing hospital readmissions and improving long-term outcomes and quality of life for those living with chronic heart failure.”

Rueda earned his medical degree from Universidad Industrial De Santander in Bucaramanga, Colombia, followed by his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami in Miami, Florida. He then completed fellowships in cardiology at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, and advanced heart failure and transplant at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Rueda serves as an assistant professor of cardiovascular services and associate director for the cardiology fellowship program at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

Rueda sees patients by referral or consultation during hospitalization. For more information, visit marshallhealth.org/services/heart-failure or call Marshall Cardiology – Huntington at 304.691.8500 or HIMG – Cardiology at 304.697.6000.
